Meet Jessica Wysopal: The Heart Behind Walking Wind Farm & Florist
Jessica Wysopal is the owner and lead designer of Walking Wind Farm & Florist and since 2016, her flower farm has grown into a vibrant, woman-led business cultivating over 200 varieties of seasonal blooms. From weekly farmers markets to stunning wedding installations, Jessica’s dedication to locally grown flowers shines through every petal.
The Inspiration Behind the Business
Jessica’s floral journey began humbly—with wildflowers gathered for her church. Volunteering her time and talents, she eventually began planting flowers around the churchyard to ensure seasonal color all year long. This sparked a realization: she could turn her passion for flowers into a business. Inspired by the abundance of nature and guided by the rhythm of the seasons, Jessica built a farm rooted in beauty and intention.
A Farm Built on Connection and Community
Walking Wind Farm & Florist is more than just flowers—it’s a community of women working together with purpose. Over the years, Jessica has unintentionally built an all-female team, welcoming teenagers exploring their interests, women seeking fulfilling part-time work, and those simply drawn to the peaceful energy of the farm. As they spend long days harvesting and arranging flowers, the team forms strong bonds and shares heartfelt conversations in a supportive, serene setting.
The Story Behind the Name
Many assume the name “Walking Wind” has a spiritual meaning—but it’s actually a nod to the farm’s natural setting. Perched on a ridge top, the land is blessed with a steady breeze that makes outdoor work more enjoyable in the summer. It’s this signature breeze that inspired the name—a tribute to the quiet, constant wind that moves gently across the farm.
The Market Rhythm
Each week from May to October, Jessica and her team follow a rhythm dictated by the farmers market season. Flowers are harvested on Wednesdays and Thursdays, stored carefully in coolers, and arranged into vibrant bouquets on Fridays. Saturdays and Sundays are market days, where they sell thousands of fresh flowers to loyal customers in Berryville, Upperville and Alexandria. This cycle repeats for 24 weeks, shaping the farm’s entire schedule.
Weddings with a Wild Touch
As market customers began asking for event florals, Jessica expanded into weddings. Though not formally trained, she pursued education through workshops and online courses with industry leaders like Intrigue Designs and Holly Heider Chapel. Her distinctive advantage lies in her product—delicate blooms grown right on the farm that most florists can’t source due to shipping limitations. Her style is known for its lush, natural, and organic feel—like something straight out of Mother Nature’s own design book.
Designing with Nature
Jessica’s favorite design resource is her field. With a pair of clippers and an artist’s eye, she walks the rows and gathers the elements needed to create arrangements that are timeless and effortless. Her philosophy is to let nature lead, embracing the natural pairings and textures found in the garden.
Balancing Life on the Farm
Running a flower farm is a full-time commitment during the growing season, but Jessica finds her personal balance in the early morning hours. A regular swimmer, she takes time before the workday begins to center herself—nurturing body and mind before nurturing blooms.
